WJFJ Hosts SINGING FOR THE SOLDIERS and SPRING PRAISE-A-THON

There’s a lot going on in Columbus, North Carolina these days. James Metcalf of WJFJ called to tell me that on Memorial Day, his station along with the Polk County Red Cross and the town of Columbus will sponsor the “SINGING FOR THE SOLDIERS.” It’s a fundraiser to collect personal items, such as dvds, cds, snacks, personal hygiene items, socks, etc. to be sent to soldiers serving in Iraq. A concert will kick off the event and concessions will be sold to cover shipping costs. Last year was the first such event and it yielded two pickup loads of items. If anyone would like to contribute to this cause, send to WJFJ, Singing for the Soldiers, P.O. Box 279, Columbus, NC 28722. Sounds like a wonderful way to support the Troops!

Also, on May 12-18th, WJFJ will be having it’s Spring Praise-A-Thon. James is especially excited about this year’s fundraiser. For the last 13 years, the station has been paying off a $500,000.00 mortgage, but they’ve finally chipped away at it until the remaining balance is $10,000. The staff of WJFJ is hoping to raise enough to finally pay off their mortgage once and for all. Donations of product and pledges can be received at WJFJ, 60 Court Street, Columbus, NC 28722.

Happy Trails To You
One of my dearest and longtime friends in this industry is Larry Dean of WYGS of Columbus, Indiana. I first began talking with him when he was at WNTS in Indianapolis, Indiana. Each time I have called him over the years, he has never failed to be pleasant, honest and helpful. He is ever the professional and yet, in each phone call, it feels like you’re talking to an old friend. He is a model for what a great Gospel DJ should be. With all Larry’s years of service to Southern Gospel Music, he is choosing to serve in a different capacity away from radio. He’s moving a few hours away from Columbus to care for his ailing mother and to be there for her. Hopefully, we’ll see Larry working again at a different station soon. He will be sorely missed until he returns. God speed my friend. You’re a good man!

Prayers and Praise

Several of you have asked me to pray for you or a loved one when I call. Here’s a few that I wanted to share.

Robin Clayton, of WLRC in Walnut, Mississippi asked that we pray for his dad who was having some tests. Those tests would determine whether he had heart surgery or not. Robin called and said that tests were good and he would not have to be undergoing surgery.

By the way, Robin is not only a legend in the DJ world; he’s also a singer and a picker. He recently recorded an album entitled, “The Gospel According To Grass.”

Dawn Weber of KJAB in Mexico, Mo was featured in an article here. A few days after we ran the feature, Dawn had a bad fall and has still been recovering from that. Although, it has been painful, Dawn says it could have been a lot worse and we’re thankful she’s doing better.

April 8th, 2008

Yes, it’s a “blast from the past” and it’s arriving at your station! Our radio disc has a new design. The disc will remind you of the days of 45 records. Not only does the disc have a “retro” design, but starting with our Disc 2008-02, We will feature a “vintage gospel” cut that will give your listener’s a walk down memory lane with each spin. March Madness - ECC Style

February 29th, 2008

Some of my “old” friends in this radio industry know what a big basketball fan I am. Over the years, I’ve spent almost as much time talking about basketball with some of my DJs as I have talking about songs. In fact, several years ago, when I had my own company, it was named “Three Point Promotions. ” I once sent out a special March Madness promotional package to all my stations which featured an NCAA Final Four Basketball, special t-shirt and Pom-poms. How many of you remember that?

And now, It’s that time of year again when teams are making a “fast break” toward March Madness, which is any basketball fan’s Heaven. Its wall to wall hoops on television, and the folks at the Eddie Crook Company are watching!

Most mornings at the ECC start with the familiar phrase, “Did you see that game last night?” Yes, we’re all talking about it, and most of us are rooting for the same team.  It’s the same team I’ve been talking about for years. How many of those “old friends” of mine remember which team is my favorite?

Vanderbilt Memorial Gym

Well, I won’t keep you in suspense for long. My favorite team is Vanderbilt. Yes, I’m one of the “Memorial Maniacs.” The historic old gym where Vandy plays ball is called Memorial Gymnasium. It’s the only gym in the country where the players benches are in the end zone instead of the sideline. Many say there is “Magic” in the walls at Memorial Gym, which is where the term Memorial Magic comes from. Vandy wins many close games there in what sometimes seem to be an unexplainable way. Some say it’s the tough scrappy teams that Vandy continues to produce, some say it’s the incredible, loyal Vandy Crowds, or could it be something more mysterious? Whatever the reason, Dave Wilcox, Eddie Crook, Cyndi Harp and myself have all experienced the “Magic of Memorial.” Scott Godsey even went to his first Vanderbilt game this year!

TEAM LOYALTIES

Here’s the stat sheet on the employees at the Eddie Crook Company, as I said before, most of us are on the same page as far as team loyalties, but there are some differences. Here’s who the ECC family cheers for:

Dave Wilcox- Vanderbilt is first, but still cheers for his hometown team of Dayton

Cyndi Harp- Cheers for Vanderbilt , her husband loves North Carolina, her daughter loves Duke, Ooh, big rivalry there! And her son loves South Carolina, a Gamecock fan.

Scott Godsey - He’s a Hoosier from Indiana

Jan Puryear, - Vandy forever! After that I’ll cheer for any SEC team, except one. Any guesses who that one team is?

Richard Harris - His son plays football for Tennessee State, so the Tigers are #1 with him.

Cheryl Jackson - tries to be impartial

WHO YA WITH?

Who’s YOUR team? I’d love to hear from my DJs about who they cheer for, what’s the most exciting game you can remember, or who’s you’re biggest rival? Who are your picks for the “Big Dance?”

Send your info to jan.puryear@eddiecrook.com and we’ll post them on the website.

The Webers at KJAB - It’s A Family Affair

February 1st, 2008

As I make my calls each month to radio stations, one of my favorite calls to make is to Dawn Weber of KJAB in Mexico, Missouri.   Dawn is always kind and positive and she really knows what her listeners like to hear. She is a true professional.

Lately, Dawn’s favorite subject is her new grandbaby, Audrey Grace. For awhile, Dawn and her husband, KJAB’s General Manager, Kevin Weber had to fly to California to see their new bundle of joy, but now Dawn and Kevin get to baby-sit anytime they want. Their son, Adam, just took a job as the pastor of their church in Mexico, Missouri, and that was a happy day for Dawn.

Dawn’s husband Kevin was the pastor of the church and the GM of the station, which is owned by the church. Dawn said it was really getting to be too much work for one man, so it worked out perfectly when her son accepted the position.

Dawn says, “It’s wonderful to be able to serve the Lord through working at a Gospel Radio Station.” She knows they are reaching people because they have received correspondence from states all across the country as well as Beijing, China and the Philippines. “Just think,” said Dawn, “there are people who would never darken the door of the church that will hear the gospel by listening to our radio station.”
High Entrees and First Time Charters

Thanks to all the stations who charted our songs in January (for the March Singing News chart). The Northmen’s “Live My Life” and Heirline’s “Words” entered the chart at #40 and #42 respectively. Congratulations also to Called Out Quartet for charting for the very first time at #75!

Melody Trio “I Thought You’d Like to Know” charted at #71 and New Ground’s “Spelling Song” charted at #37. Both groups have new singles out this month.

Until next time, see you in the charts!

A LEGEND AMONG DJS

In the years that Ive promoted songs in Gospel Radio, Ive met many great disc jockeys, but very few legends. At this years National Quartet Convention, I had the great privilege to once again spend time with such a man. Billy Nobles, longtime DJ for WMGY in Montgomery, AL stopped by to say Hello. Billy is held it high esteem, not just among promoters and DJs, but by everyone in the Gospel Music Industry. During the time I worked with Billy, his knowledge of radio, music and just the way he treated everyone with kindness and courtesy, had a profound affect on me. I am honored to have learned from him in radio, and to continue to call him my good friend.

Larry Dean, The Indiana Legend

Larry Dean has been at his current job at WYGS in Columbus, Indiana for the last two years. However, his last joblarry-dean.JPG was at WNTS in Indianapolis for 25 years. Any way you cut it, Larrys been a constant voice for gospel music in Indiana for the last 27 years.

Larrys first job in radio began when he was 14 where he pulled records, ran for coffee, and swept floors for the afternoon drive guy. At 16, he did a weekend afternoon program. Although, Larry spent most of his years in radio at WNTS, hes now at WYGS which covers most of the southern part of Indiana. Its a Top 40 station, playing their Top 40 every 4-5 hours. They also play past and future classics and those special songs that arent a hit, but speak to the heart.

WYGS is a listener supported station broadcasting from seven different towns in southern Indiana and northern Kentucky. It can also be heard on the internet at WYGS.org.

Since were listener supported, we created promotions to help with the finances. One is the Coffee Can Club where the members contribute $25.00 per month and get a free coffee mug, t-shirt and a free WYGS Trio recording,(the WYGS Trio is made up of the morning guy, the front desk lady and the operations manager), advance notice on area singings and a newsletter every month. Theres also the Mustard Seed Club where its members contribute $10.00 each month, get a free coffee mug and receive a newsletter each month.

Another thing WYGS is famous for is playing local groups. Larry says they have a daily program called The Local Drive at Five where they spotlight local talent.

Larrys excited about something else they do at WYGS. Its Concert Promotion. He says they have 450-470 at their gatherings which always features a love offering.

Even though it sounds like Larry never leaves the station, he does have other interests. Hes married with four children and seven grandchildren. He and his wife live in Greenwood, Indiana, a suburb of Indianapolis. He also spends time cheering on the Indianapolis Colts and Purdue University.

When asked to tell something interesting about himself, Larry said, I always know where Im going, unless you count the time I made a wrong turn and followed a farmers truck into his pig farm (my wife reminds me of that one constantly).

Larry Dean has always been a friend to radio promoters. He was one of those rare DJs that always had time to talk and once you talked with him, it felt instantly as if you were talking to a lifetime friend. I feel so blessed to have worked with this fine man since I first started work in radio promotions.

Jans Journal salutes Larry Dean and his 27 wonderful years of service to Gospel Music!

This month, The Kirklands, When I Couldnt Pray received the most points it has received to date, 168. However, because of Singing News policy about songs coming back on the chart, they advised us that the song needed 180 point to come back on the chart. There is no way to determine how many points a song needs until the points are tabulated each month.
Although, we are very disappointed, we appreciate all the stations that played and charted the Kirklands. Thanks especially to those who charted it. They are: WXIC, WDCY, WRNA, WDFB, WXRQ, WBFC, WWWC, WZAP, WROM, WVOB, WLRC, WHHV, KWXT.

WJMD’s Scott Napier, the Duke Of Hazzard

im000036.JPGFor eleven years, Scott Napier, has been a voice in Southern Gospel Music. He’s the one you’ll hear when you drive through Hazzard, a small town in Kentucky, and he loves it there.”We are a small town. Our listeners are extraordinary. They support Christian Radio so well. Our building burned a few years ago, and people came together to help us in so many different ways. This past October, we had to buy a new transmitter. We had a special day to raise money with a $10,000.00 goal. We raised $16,000.00 in just 8 hours. Our listeners are very special people,” he says.
Not only do the listeners get involved with the station, Scott says the radio station gets involved in the community. “We try to involve ourselves with our community,” he says, “as far as getting behind local events and fundraising efforts with free advertising and interviewing the organizers of such events. We always do church announcements and events. We like to feel connected.”
Scott says being in Hazzard always brings questions about the TV show, “The Dukes of Hazzard.” I asked him if the real “Dukes of Hazzard” town.
“When we are traveling or talking to folks, 95% of the time, someone will mention it. The show was supposed to be Hazzard County in Georgia. However, `our City leaders play it up. In the past years, our annual Black Fold Festival brought the entire cast here for the festival and Parade. Our mayor even has a special recognition for folks that offer outstanding service to our community. He awards them with being an Honorary Duke of Hazard, like most cities would honor folks by giving them a key to the city.”
Like many fellow Kentuckians, Scott’s blood runs deep blue. His favorite team is the Kentucky Wildcats who are famous playing “roundball” in a place called Rupp Arena.
Scott is especially excited about their new coach, Billy Gillespie from Texas A & M.”I am excited about the beginning of a new era with Coach Gillespie or “Billy G,” He bring a freshness and great work ethic on and off the court. I am looking forward to next season.”
But, the apple of Scott’s eye is his young son Jarrett. He and his wife Kim were married 19 years before they were blessed with a son. As you can see in the picture, they make a beautiful family.
Hats off to Scott and the wonderful work he does in Hazzard, Kentucky!

PLEASE NOTE: The KirklandsWhen I Couldn’t Pray” was at #39 for the May 2007 Chart with 112 points. This month the Kirklands received 157 points, but dropped off the Singing News Chart. Because the charts are fluid, we have seen cases where a song will lose points and move up, and, as is this case, a song will gain points and drop. We still believe strongly that this is a Top 20 song for the Kirklands. It tells the testimony of Cliff Kirkland and could be the testimony of so many people who have heard and been touched by it.We will continue to push this song PLEASE DO NOT DROP THIS SONG FROM YOUR ROTATIONS. We are advised by Singing News that the song can come back on the chart for July. WE REALLY NEED YOUR HELP ON THIS.
Here are the stations that reported the song to it’s highest point total yet:
WRNA, WZAP, WDCY, WGTJ, WDFB, WEKT, WBFC, WXRQ, WJMD, WXIC, WELJ, WBTG, WWWC, WHHV, WJCV, WLRC, WROM, WTTI, WVOB.
